On Wednesday, it was announced that South Africa Rugby and PRO14 Rugby will organize the Double Rainbow Cup tournament without formal approval and with no cross-hemisphere schedule, which allowed the South African team to enter the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Despite the great efforts, the South African team has not yet obtained the necessary permissions for travel and is not allowed to play the PRO14 Rainbow Cup as originally planned.
Various options for the South African team to safely travel to Europe and based in the United Kingdom were studied, but due to the increased restrictions caused by South Africa's designation of Covid-19's "red list" territory, the risks could not be put into practice.
In this place, the "Southern" tournament is called "Rainbow Cup SA". It will include Cell C Sharks, DHL Stormers, Emirates Lions, and Vodacom Bulls, who will play against each other for a seven-week double-round match. The new schedule will be announced soon.
The "Northern" Guinness PRO14 Rainbow Cup will play on the previously announced date, and matches involving the South African team, which removed from the schedule, and in the 4th, 5th or 6th round, the opponents will see each other for a week.
This decision has no impact on the long-term partnership between PRO14 Rugby and South Africa Rugby. More detailed information about the start of the 2021/22 season and the league structure will be made public soon.
